Prerequisites & limitations

This article presents some important prerequisites and limitations you should consider before using Universal Print (in Ultimo). For all prerequisites on Universal Print in general, visit this page.

Licensing

A specific Universal Print license is required before it can be used. Ultimo cannot offer this license, this has to be arranged by your own organisation. Universal Print is included in several Microsoft 365 subscriptions, but can also be purchased as a standalone subscription.

Universal Print comes with a monthly pool of print jobs that are calculated based on all users who have a license. The number of print jobs that each license contributes to the pool depends on the license type, and unused print jobs expire at the end of each month.

Region support

Universal Print is deployed in Azure data centers within specific regions. For the best experience, users of the service should reside near one of these regions.

Known issues and limitations

As Universal Print is still evolving, several known issues and limitations should be taken into account. The most notable issues and limitations for using Universal Print in Ultimo can be found below.

Supported paper sizes

Universal Print currently supports page printers only. In Ultimo, this means we can successfully print any A3, A4 or Letter sized paper.

Label printing

Label printers are officially not supported by Universal Print. However, Microsoft has introduced a workaround that allows for label printing with Universal Print, and this solution is compatible with Ultimo.

With our recommended Zebra ZD421C test printer, we have been able to successfully set up and test the workaround provided by Microsoft. Carefully review the following page for detailed instructions on setting up label printing support in Universal Print:

Note: Ultimo does not provide assistance in implementing this workaround. The responsibility for setting up this solution lies with your IT department.

Page scaling (margins)

While testing Universal Print in Ultimo, it was discovered that the page scale (margins) is different when comparing it with manually printed paper. Universal Print pages have bigger margins when comparing them to manually printed pages using page scale 'default'. Unfortunately, this is not something we can influence in a good manner. Scaling options for Universal Print can be set in the default printer properties in the Azure portal. Based on our own test results, 'Auto' seems to be the best fit at the moment. It may differ per printer what the best default scaling option is.
